Map of Deseşti: Wooden church
The wooden church in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Desești, was built at the end of the eighteenth century (1770 or 1780) by Greek-Catholic believers, who today claim it. Romanian Orthodox Church received a ban after Greek Catholic religion.
The church has a rectangular plan, a polygonal altar, a double eaves, a bell tower with an arbor above which the slim and flared base rises. The door frame is decorated with the rope motif. The painting inside the church in Desești has been kept in good condition.
Absida a fost decorată de pictorul Bacinschi Andrei, pronaosul de Radu Munteanu. Iconostasul format din trei registre suprapuse a fost realizat de Alexandru Ponehalschi în anul 1780. Ușile împărătești sunt frumos sculptate, medalioanele în formă de inimă sunt înconjurate de vrejurile viței de vie.
Restoration of the church began in 1996. For three years were carried out extensive restoration. Beams were replaced, the frame was revised, the helmet was restored to its original form and the paintings were restored, the first attempt of its kind in Maramures.
