Map of Sâncraiu

Sâncraiu, won the European village title assigned by the Council of Europe's delegates to Romaina. Due to its location on the boarderline, the village belonged now to Hungary, now to Romania. There were even cases when villagers needed a passport and had to travell abroad in order to work their fields. However, not even these circumstances could affect their determination to preserve the community's cultural heritage. As years passed by the dances held here became international events.
The house, accomodating 40 people, has become more comfortable, direction signs have been erected, the internet has been introduced. All in all, folk art,traditions that live on, and the openness of the local people have made the the banks of Kalota brook a tourist paradise. The village was first mentioned in written documents is 1288. However, archeologic findings have proven that the village existed earlier,in Roman times. Reformed Church was built in the XIIIth century. A linden-tree and a memorial set for the famous Hungarian poet Ady Endre speak of his visit to Sâncraiu.
