Map of Bran: The castle

In the fourteenth century Turkish peril causes him King Louis I of Anjou to build fortresses on the borders of the Hungarian Kingdom. In order to control Bran pass, in 1377 issue an act, which gives residents of Brașov the privilege of building a fortress. In 1388 the castle was finished.
Fortress was led by a castelan. In the struggle against the Turks in the period 1407-1419 Mircea cel Batran, ruler of Romanian country have the right to use the castle. In 1409 this right is transferred Szekler committee. In 1498, the Brasov Saxons buys the right to use for 10 years.
After several extensions, in 1651, the city of Brasov gets the rightful owner of the fortress. Since the eighteenth century, the fortress lost its strategic importance and becomes an administration building. On 1 December 1920, the city Council of Brasov donated the castle to Queen Maria of Romania.
After restoration led by the Royal architect Karel Liman castle with 57 rooms became royal summer residence. Around the castle was created a English park with two lakes and a tea house. Queen Mary bequeathed the castle to her daughter Princess Ileana.
After the abdication of King Michael I of Romania Archduchess Ileana in early 1948 he was forced into exile, and the castle become in the property Romanian state. In 1957 opens here Medieval history and art Museum. In 2006, Bran Castle was returned to the heirs of Ileana Archduchess of Austria.
The new owners are Dominic von Habsburg-Lothringen, Maria-Elisabeth Sandhofer and Magdalean Holzhausen. The property was administered up in 2009 by the Romanian state. Since May 2009, the heirs of the Royal Family arranged interiors with pieces from his personal collection.
