Map of Hălmagiu

Halmagiu is attested in 1444 and 1451 as residence of the voivode Moga. In 1450, priest Simion from Halmagiu translated those four gospels to Slavonic language. From this epoch it's kept in the court of the current cultural fireside a dump of earth where it can be observed the marks of an old bezant church (XV century). In the middle ages in Halmagiu there was a fortress that assured the protection of these regions and that was destroyed in 1706 in the time of the arousal against the Habsburgs of 1703-1711. In front of building with nr. 113 there is the Cinzaiului Rock where were executed the corporal punishments of the carls after the orders of the "Domeniu" (squatter). The seat of the squatter was on the place of the present cultural fireside. In 1764 the station gets into the hands of the Bethlen family which insalls in a new multi-storey castle having gross walls transformed afterwards in "Birtul Mare" that dined Avram Inacu as well.
The troops of Horia, Cloșca și Crișan crossed through the central marketplace to attack the genteel establishments in 1784. In the building of the old mayor's office under the pressure of the mass he decided that in the period 1863-1876 the official language became the Romanian and also here in 1918 the masses put an end of the Austro-Hungarian admin.
At the border of the settlement there is the tunnel from Bortoci, it had been accessible until 1950. At the Banesti bridge a memorial cross reminds us of the heroes of the arousal from 1784 and of the revolutionists of 1848-1849. The parish also has two orthodox churches.
