Map of Saschiz: The Fortress
The ruins of the fortress are to be found at one kilometre from the settlement, 500 m above the village.
It was built during the XVI century. The village dwellers were protected by six towers and a 8-9 m high wall. There is a fifty metre deep well inside the fortress which used to be connected with the centre of the village through a tunnel.
In 1704 the fortress was occupied by the courtesans, but was quickly recaptured by the Austrian teams. Prior to World War I the city was full, it was well maintained, but after the massive Saxon departure it became a ruin.
Today the walls surround a devastated wreckage, only a 50 m deep well has resisted the time. The shaft was connected through an underground tunnel with the center of the locality.
