Map of Târgu Neamţ: Neamţ fortress

Built during the time of Petru I. Mușat (1375-1391) and attested in 1395, Neamț Fortress is one of the most beautiful medieval fortifications. In the time of Peter I the fortress had thick and raised walls of 12-15m. The city is known for its period of glory during the reign of Stepfan cel Mare.
He ordered the elevation of the walls at 20 m, the construction of 4 bastions and a bridge supported on stone pillars. The section near the wall rises in case of distress. The ditch around the fort had a length of 25m and a depth of 10m.
Inside the fortress were buildings, church, storehouses, workshops. After the Ottoman rule was established throughout the country, they asked Alexandru Lăpușneanu (1564-1568) to destroy the citadel. The fortress is restored by Jeremiah Movila, and strengthened by Vasile Lupu (1634-1653).
From 1691 until the Treaty of Karlovitz (1699) he is on the hand of the Polish king Sobieski. In the Austro-Turkish war of 1716-1718, the Austrians occupy the Neamt Fortress. After this event, from 1718 the city lost its military importance.
Remaining in ruins was destroyed by locals who were carrying stone for house construction. In 1834 this phenomenon was stopped, and 32 years later, in 1866 the city was declared a historic monument. It took another 100 years to restore the fortress.
In the absence of precise data, missing parts were not reconstructed. After the consolidation and reconstruction of the walls (1968-1972), the fortress was opened to tourists. Inside the fortress we encounter the atmosphere of the past.
We can visit the counseling and judgment hall, the prison, the chamber of the rulers, the kitchen, the supply room, the weapons room, the secret room, the mint, the chapel of the fortress, etc.
