The cigarette factory is the country's oldest factory of this type and, after Fiume, it was the greatest factory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was set up in 1846, before the introduction of the state monopoly on tobacco. Since then, it has been extended several times, the activity and the number of workers has increased. In 1880 it had 1.890 employees. At the end of 1919, the factory was included in the State Monopoly Administration and a new stage of development started through the factory's endowment with a new equipment.
