The salt pits on the Arieș River appear in documents since 1075. Turda City is due to the salt deposit estimated at 39000 million tons. Surface exploitation started in Roman times gave rise to salty lakes. Deployment and salt transport on the Aries River began in the Hungarian rule. The importance of exploitation is proven by the fact that the property right took him when the king, when the state, when the church. In 1853 the Ferenc József Gallery was built and the Terezia and Rudolf mines were upgraded. A huge administrative apparatus was built around the operation. The headquarters of the Transylvania salt mine management and court and the port judges were at Turda, and the Mines Direction in Cluj.
In 1880 the management was moved to Ocna Mures, then began a steady decline in Turda, mine closed in 1932. During the Second World War, the mine was opened again to provide refuge for the population during the air strikes.
In the period 1950-1992 the Franz Joseph Gallery was used as a cheese store. Since 1992 it has been a tourist attraction, in 2010 being refurbished from European money. Looking down from the terrace at 20 m height, the new look of the mine appears in front of the eyes. The view is impressive. The waterfall highlights the new facilities in the Rudolf mine: the amphitheater with 100 heated seats, the sports ground and the huge wheel. A giant gondola, a lift, a minigolf court and playgrounds were set up.
On Lake Theresa arranged in mine we can ride the boat around the island of salt, or to tremble passing under huge cascade of salt. Those who descend or climb the steps of the 13 floors can make an impression on the life of the miner, and on the walls can see the year in which the level was exploited.
