Map of The Balta Castle: Bethlen castle

The former fortress of the locality was located in the floodplain area, the swamp of Tarnava, from which it was named Cetatea de Baltă. Building destroyed by Tatars and was restored in 1321. King Matias certified estate donates 1462 Transylvanian Prince János Pongrácz. After his death in 1476 Stefan cel Mare receives him as a reward for his loyalty, and in 1507 he is inherited by his son Bogdan Vodă. Voivode Petru Rares, due to the support given to Ferdinand I, lost the fortress in 1538, which according to the decision of the national assembly was demolished in 1565.
In 1622 Bethlen István of Ictar, brother of prince Bethlen Gábor instead of a mansion builds the current castle. After several owners in 1758 Chancellor Bethlen Gábor bought it from the Treasury.
By exchange in 1764, the estate came to his brother, Bethlen Miklós, who built a stairwell in front of the castle, demolished the surrounding wall, and built a chapel, a stable and a tower (collapsed in 1972 ).
In memory of these great works, the commemorative plaque behind the castle, on which the figure 1773 is seen, was erected, and in the back a hatched hussar. In 1884 the estate is lost to the books by Bethlen Márk, the new owner being the grove of Haller Jenő.
During the 1944 struggle, the castle was damaged, it became a grunt, an office building, and since the early 1970s the Jidvei factory has used the cellars for storing champagne. Currently, the castle is privately owned.
The new owner, Claudiu Necșulescu, the Jidvei patron, bought it from the nephew of the last Haller Grove, accepting not to change the appearance of the building. The castle is undergoing renovation. Visiting it is possible only for groups, prenotation and wine tasting.
