Map of Săpânţa: Merry Cemetery

Merry Cemetery in Sapanta is a tourist attraction with a remarkable history dating from 1935. The first crosses were made comic by Stan Ioan Patras in a historical period unstable. Northern Transylvania was under Hungarian occupation and no one knew how long.
Romanian language was forbidden in government and schools, and Greek Catholic priest Gregory Rițiu, professor of Romanian and Latin, to preserve the Romanian language and suggested the young master to broaden the vertical part of the cross and pass them one epitaph in Romanian.
Their number has increased every year, reaching today to over 800. The crosses are made of oak, the background color is blue Săpânța are hand engraved and decorated with simple naive scenes taken from village life.
Faces life appears that the death of the cross. In 1977, Stan Ioan Pătraș dies, and the business was taken over by Dumitru Pop, who worked for 9 years with the master. He is in charge of the mentor's memorial house. In the cemetery is the former Greek-Catholic church.
