Sinaia is the only place in the country having two royal stations. The older one was built by the executives of the National Railway Company for Carol I in 1886. Europe's most famous train, the Orient Express also stops here. On the platform there is a memorial plate marking the spot where Prime Minister Ion Duca was assassinated by the Iron Guard in 1933. His father, George Duca, had been the chief executive of the National Railway Company for many years. The second station was commenced by Carol II, and built in between 1938-1940 by the executives. It was built following the plans of architect Duiliu Marcu, whose other plans include the Athene Palace, the Romanian Academy Library, the opera in Timisoara and the Bucharest railway mansion. The station is a stone building, and it still displays the sign of Carol II: two C-s. It was reserved exclusively for the Royal Family and its guests. The building also featured a depot which housed the royal train. The curtianed windows of the official salon hide the large size fresco(5,50X5,50m) depicting a hunting scene with 8 eight life-size characters. Alongside the painting made by Dimitrie Știubei there is an inscription reading Basarab voivode, XIV century. The salon is not open to the public!
