Sovata is one of the youngest settlements in Szeklerland. It was documented in 1578 and 1597 appears as a village. The first colonists were the families of salt guards who were brought here to guard the salt mines. Between the two wars the resort grew nicely and became known. In 1932 there were 4 hotels and 110 villas. After the war, the spa life experienced a regression, under the direction of famous Viennese balneologist Marius Sturza, the resort had a new period of development. It has even become a place loved by the royal couple, Queen Maria built a villa on the bank of the Sovata brook.
The climate of Sovata is caracterized by colder summers and milder winters. On the territory of the village there are 6 salty lakes: Ursu, Aluniș, Mierlei, Roșu, Negru, Verde and 2 lakes with fresh water: Paraschiva and Tivoli.The watering-place is mainly visited by those who suffer from gynaecological or rheumatic complaints. Accordingly the curer departments provides hot-water, mud-pack, kinetoterapical, hidroterapical and electroterapical treatments. For those who want to recreate there are gaming-rooms, movies, indoor swimming-pools, discoteques, biliard saloons, sports grounds, boat-houses, fishing posibilities and ski runs. The winter-sport funs may find only 6 km of well-equipped ski runs.
