Map of Jibou: Botanical garden

After nationalization the English garden of the Wesselényi castle became a public property whitout an owner. After 1959 Vasile Fati the biology teacher at the high school which functioned in the castle's building had militated for the creating a new botanical garden here with a climate protected by the high hills which is surrounding it. The dream became real in 1968, the works for the arrangement of a botanical garden were started.
First greenhouses with 110 square meters surface built between 1968 and 1970 with pupils' help, teacher and staff of the high school. Greenhouses were built in 1978 and 1982 and they rise different opinions.
Over the years the specialists of the botanical garden gathered many plant species, they learned to reproduce orchids and they contacted many similar institution fronm the country and from the foreign countries. After 40 years of hard work Vasile Fati died in 2007.
But his spirit is not dead and the botanical garden is growing and waiting its visiters having over 5000 plants from all over the world. A a wonderful program for one day could be the park's visiting because on the past Wesselényi field there is an aquarium and a small zoo.
