Up until in 1542 Zalău was the property of Romanian-catholic bishopric from Transylvania. In 1241 the church dedicated to the Holly Cross is demolished by the Moguls then rebuilt in 1246 by Transylvania bishopric, keeped probably in this shape until reformation.
The reforming current breaks through in 1527, spreading for 123 years. The result is that since 1650 the Catholic Church stops existing at Zalău for 102 years. In 1741 the Franciscan monks arrived at Zalău were banished from the locality by count Wesselényi. In 1748 Zalău had only 7 Catholic Christians, but in 1752 it was named a priest and in 1780 the royal court allows the construction of a church. In 1784 the chapel and a wooden tower with 3 bells was finished. The present church construction starts in 1878, on the basis of Jenei István and lasted 4 years. At the parishioners' requests in 1911 two big bells are made. In 1917 the army took the biggest bell and the three bells from the old tower. In 1929 are made two new bells thus the tower has now three bells.
