At that time, according to city laws, the orthodox community wasn't allowed to build a church inside the castle walls. After numerous attempts, in 1786, the city aldermen granted them to transform a few Saxon houses' backyard into a church, but without a tower or bell. The money was gathered by Greek and Romanian orthodox believers and the Brâncoveanu family. For a year the services were held in Romanian and Greek, but in 1789 the Greeks wanted the church for themselves. The lawsuit lasted for 100 years and it was the Greeks who won. It was then that the church in the centre was built.
Only in 1942 when the Greeks left did the Orthodox Church take over the Greek church. The frescoes in the interior were painted by Gulimievici in 1859. The icons dating from the XVII-XVIIIth century are painted on canvas and wood, the altar screen dates from 1855. There is a 1633 icon from Venice and a gilded silver Greek evangelism which was made by Samuil May, C. Brâncoveanus' craftsman. The most valuable objects and books have been donated by duke Grigore Brâncoveanu. The Brâncoveanu family and many of the Greek community lay in the church cemetary, archbishop Ugrovlahiei Dosoftei is also burried here.
