Map of Sibiu: The Catholic Church
This baroque style church was built in the XVIIIth century because during the reformation everything went in the property of the Lutherans. In 1687 the catholic life starts to regain its strength when priests hold services in private houses. The Jesuits also appear but they don't have a church.
When the Austrian Kaisers troops reach Sibiu in 1691, they bring with themselves the Jesuit priests. Their church, built between 1726-1733, was simple, without any decoration. It had white walls and transparent windows.
The lead-glass made in Budapest, was installed during the beginning of the XXth century. The painting behind the main altar, made in 1777, is the work of the Austrian Anton Steinwald. The other paintings had been made by Ludwig Kandler in 1904.
The pipe-organ dating from 1860 was made by Carl Hesse. The parsonage had been finished in 1739, in the yard a statue of Janos Nepomuk can be seen. Once this statue stood in front of the church, but the communists took it to the Brukenthal museum. After long debates the parsonage regained, renovated and re-erected the statue in the church yard, in 1987.
