Map of Sibiu: The Fat Tower

Built in 1540, this awkward looking tower is made of stone and bricks. This U shaped structure was built 25 meters outside the fortified walls. With its elaborated defensive storeys, it proved to be very efficient outpost in confronting enemies. In 1778 printer Martin Hochmeister established here the first German language theater. At first they only presented children plays, but after 1787 it became a theater that surpassed those from Prague, Graz and Budapest. Up to 1788, 130 plays have been presented to the public. In 1949, the theaters 171 anniversary was interrupted by a rousing fire.
There was a fire in 1826, but Hochmeister renovated the place. The building was renovated in 2004 and coupled to the Thalia parlour.
