Map of Sibiu: History Museum

The history museum is located in the old town hall. This building was built in the time of mayor Thomas Altemberger in 1470-1491. The Latin engraving on the door was made as a memoir that emperor Jozsef II. had visited this place. In 1545 the town had ownership over the building and the town hall moved into it. In the XVI-XVIIIth centuries was expanded and two new wings were built.
In 1948 the mayoralty moved into a new building. The building was renovated (1967-1984) and the History museum (since 1959) was moved into it, from the Brukenthal palace. The permanent exhibition was fully reorganised (2006-2007) implying, besides the re-establishment of the space, a thematic reorganisation of the exhibits, according with the newest museographical standards. The permanent exhibition is structured on the following sections: basement: The Ancient History Lapidarium, The Medieval Lapidarium; ground Floor: Arms and Armours; first Floor: The Emergence of Human Settlements in Southern Transylvania, The Guilds of Sibiu, The Glaswork in Transylvania, The Magistrate of Sibiu; the tower: Coins and Medals, Treasury.
