Map of Sibiu: Natural History Museum

The ground stone of the museum was the Transylvanian Scientific Association (Siebenburgischer Verein fur Naturwiessenschaften) formed in 1849. At first the museum had serious storing problems, but in 1895 a fund-raising started from which the new building of the museum was made. There are more than 1.000.000 exhibit objects, some from collectors but most of them are from the museum specialists. Here you can see J. Lerchenfeld herbalists 1811 piece collection, M. Fuss's (1834-1882) 29.000 piece herbal collection, F. W. Stetter's (1853) 528 piece local and foreign ornithological collection. You can also see Acting Consul Franz Binder's Palestinian, Egyptian, Sudan and Ethiopian ethnography collection. Ackner's mineralogy collection. Dr. Eugen Worell's (1957) 95.000 piece European, African, American and Asian insectarium. Weindel's (1965) 7.000 piece butterfly collection. H. Hannenheim's (1964) 10.000 piece insectarium. Breckner's (1955) 7.000 piece paleontological collection, which is made up mainly of shark teeth from the region of Porcesti. Nyaradi's (1980) 152.000 piece phytology collection and Dr. E.Bielz's (1953) 250.000 piece conch collection. During 2007, the Museum of Natural History has been the object of major transformation introducing elements of novelty in the fashion of presentation; there are the illumination system (following the night-day cycle) and the sounding one (reproducing the sounds dynamic of each eco-system). The permanent exhibition comprises three sectors: the Zoology, the Paleonthology and the Mineral sector.
