King Stefan Hotel (Istvan Kiraly), was built in 1874, by the City Hall of Baia Mare, the mayor being Fésüs Menyhért. The construction included a hotel, a restaurant and a casino. The building was modernized in 1901. After December 1989, the hotel was sold. The scandalous story of an illegal sale drags on today. It is incredible how the State Property Fund managed to sell a building of the City Hall. The hotel became the property of a company in Liechtenstein in 1998. The new owners had to invest $ 1.2 million in the building over three years.
In 2000-2001 the roof and the exterior were restored. Inside it is completely emptied there were only walls and structure resistance and the owners have mortgaged it, whenever needed. City councilors are helplessly looking at the largest building in the city center.
