The origins of the museum collections are found in Baia Mare Museum Association, founded in 1899 by historian Schönherr Gyula, member of the Hungarian Academy. To present these archaeological collections, crafts, coins, weapons and firearms, documents, books, opened in 1904 Museum of Baia Mare town. Over 6900 objects were divided into four collections: archeology and history, art, natural science, library and archive.
In 1914, the patrimony consisted of 11489 pieces. The turbulent times after 1918 also influenced the activity of the museum. After 1945 the museum had a heritage of over 10,700 pieces and a library of approx. 14,000 volumes. Going through several reorganizations today the County Museum of History and Archeology boasts over 70,000 exhibits, structured into 4 sections: archeology, history, technique and library.
Museum of History and Archeology Museum is part of Maramures County, with County Museum of Ethnography and Folklore and the County Museum of Art - Artistic Center Baia Mare.
