The idea of founding a Transylvanian Museum came into count József Kemény 's (1795-1855) mind who offered in 1842 his own books, document and mineral collection for the foundation of a Transylvanian Museum.
His dream came true only after his death as then arose the occasion of taking the collection to Budapest or Sibiu, Then count Imre Mikó (1805-1876) offered his villa that was located in a formal-garden of 10 yoke for the museum foundation. So in 1859 it was found the Transylvanian Museum and for the exhibits expansion was founded the Transylvanian Museum association. The Mikó villa turned out to be too small. A part of the exhibits was at the university where it underlay several research papers.
Thanks to the university professors the collection survived the appertain changing but the association was closed down in 1950 (the still-alive members restarted it in 1990). The Romanian state bought the Maecenas of Clujan acting Dániel Petrichevich-Horváth's house and it gave it for use to the university. From then on this building has been giving place to the former EKE coin and antique collection. In 1962 is founded the Historical Museum what's actual name is National Historical Museum of Transylvania and the number of research exhibits is over 400 thousand.
The museum has archeological, middle and new-age historical sections, roman and middle-age stone repository. The "treasury" of the museum is in two rooms where it can be seen over 4000 jewels, coins and decorations from different ages.
