The history of the Clujan University started in the XVI century with the foundeation of the Jesuit Academy. After the 1848's revolution the population having Romanian mother-language asked for university with Romanian study language. The then-President of the Board of Education József Eötvös pleaded with the idea to found a university having 3 study languages: Hungarian, Romanian and German. Meanwhile Eötvös died and in 1872 József Ferenc sanctioned the Hungarian language to be the only study language. This evoked the dispraise of the Romanian population.
So after they swore the professorial oath in at 20 December 1872 258 adolescents could begun their years of study. From 1895 the girls may have studied as well at universities. In 1902 the new it was dedicated the University building … and came the time when the professors didn't qualified for the Romanian king Ferdinand I therefore in 1919 it was established the Romanian University and the Hungarian was closed down. The ulterior moved for 3 semesters to Budapest then from 1921 the education continued at Szeged. In 1940 the József Ferenc University moved back to Cluj and the Romanian University took refuge at Timisoara and Sibiu. The year of 1945 brought a new adventure as both universities the Babes and the Bolyai had started their education at Cluj then in 1945 they were integrated. After this unrestful history the year of 1989 brought new breezes in the University's life as well. Actually over 40000 students are learning at Hungarian, Romanian and German faculties.
