Originally in the northern part of the building was the Kakas House, with rooms preferred by the principles of Transylvania in the 16th century.
According to the legend in 1594 Sigismund Báthory witnessed, from the window of this building, the executions of pro-Turkish leaders. The one-storey became the residence of the Jósika family in the mid XIXth century. In 1828 Jósika János, governor of Transylvania, built a small second floor on the building. The inscription MDCCCXXVIII, on the front of the building, refers to this event. The building hosted the Casino, the Royal Board, the Palace of Justice, the Court of Appeal and the Faculty of Medicine Library, during which time the first signs of failure under the weight of the books appeared, requiring a long-lasting renovation.
